Demographic Survey of Village: January 2011
A demographic survey of the village of Khintla was conducted to better understand the needs, challenges and likely social impacts of the project.

Topographic Survey of Village: February 2011
A topographic survey of the village was conducted in order to plan the location of system elements, making the most of natural landscape features.

Geotechnical Investigation: April 2011
A geotechnical survey was conducted to better understand the sub-surface environment and inform the engineering design.

Hydraulic Design: April 2011
To minimise power and maintenance requirements, a hydraulic design has been adopted to create a gravity based system.

Preliminary Designs Developed: July 2011
A set of preliminary detailed designs and drawings were drafted. This was based on the technical and social survey results, best practice and the guidance published in "The manual of Sewerage and Sewage Treatment" by the Indian Ministry of Urban Development.

Facilities Audit: September 2011
An audit of the toilet requirements for the village was carried out. This established the materials and labour required to expand the remit of the project beyond the construction of the sewerage system, to include the installation of toilets in homes.

Procurement: October 2011
Suppliers of materials and skills are being sourced from within the village or as near as possible, to provide local economic benefits. The procurement process has been hampered by the monsoon. Local flooding has made it difficult for contractors to visit the site and provide quotes.

Awareness Raising: November 2011
A process of awareness raising has been taking place with the villagers so that they are fully engaged with the project and understand how the project is progressing and what will be taking place during the construction phase. An essay writing competition was held at the local school challenging students to consider how life will be different once the project is complete.

Contract Negotiations: December 2011
Contracts with various interested parties are negotiated and finalised prior to construction starting.

Sewerage Network Construction Begins: February 2012
Construction of the sewerage network is due to start in November. Works on the ground will be co-ordinated and project managed by staff from the Aga Khan Rural Support Partnership (India), who managed the recent water supply installation and so have experience of managing such construction projects.

Treatment Plant Construction Begins: February 2012
Construction of the waste water treatment plant begins. The plant will convert waste water and matter into usable fertiliser, made available to local farmers.

Construction Well Underway: June 2012
By this point in the year construction of the system was well underway.

Break for the Monsoon: July 2012
Monsoon weather stalled construction briefly however spirits were not dampened.

BMT Volunteers Visit the Site: August 2012
A number of volunteers from the BMT group of companies visited the construction site in Khintla to view progress and get involved.

Construction Ends: October 2012
Completion of the whole system and handover ceremony to the villagers.
