What is BMT Giveback?

In celebration of the company’s 25th anniversary, BMT launched a new and unique initiative, BMT Giveback, challenging its staff to provide positive engineering solutions to global problems.

In early 2010, BMT employees were invited to participate in an initiative, ‘BMT Giveback’, to provide ideas for a project that would mark the celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary. The initiative tasked staff with identifying a problem that negatively impacts on people’s lives and proposing a solution.

Given the company's pedigree in conceptualising and delivering world class projects, it was no surprise that BMT's employees around the world applied their skills, knowledge and ingenuity to identify new ways to address problems that impact negatively on people's lives.

A large number of ideas were put forward for consideration - from sustainable power barges and disaster relief ships to rainwater traps and rice planting machines - with the winning project selected through an online vote open to all staff.

Criteria stated that any solution should use the knowledge, expertise and skills of BMT staff and focus on developing countries, perhaps addressing issues such as flooding, drought, housing, sanitation, energy supply and food production to name just a few.

As a result of an internal competition that saw over one hundred well thought out ideas being submitted, a vote was cast by BMT staff and a winner chosen.

With over 37% of the votes, the winner was the 'Low Cost Drainage and Sewage Treatment' for the village of Khintla in India, an idea sent in by the staff of BMT Consultants India, based in Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Chennai.

A fantastic concept that will, initially, benefit the community of a small village in India but, it is hoped in time, will be replicated across many other villages throughout the country.
